We are sadly reaching the end of VAM, and it’s definitely an emotional time. Having to end something I’ve been doing for 3 years straight. But, it has truly been such an amazing experience and I’ve learned so much about myself and what I’m capable of.
We just finished the final celebration of learning and it went very well in my opinion. Everyone’s art looked so beautiful. My art got finished in time, and I am very happy with how it turned out. I did a series of 3 horror movie dioramas, inspired from my favorite scenes from the movies Friday the 13th, The Exorcist, and The Shining. Each diorama took a lot of painting, miniatures, and hot glue. It was a very meticulous project but I am so happy I decided to switch my idea and pursue this instead. During the art show I got to talk to people about this project and connect with people who love the movies as well as love horror in general. People seemed to love it, and many people took pictures of it for their own personal usage as well as multiple teachers took pictures of it for the yearbook. It was such a fun experience truly getting to do whatever it is that I am interested in. I enjoyed it so incredibly much.

This month has slowed down a bit. It has become easier and more organized. I got the boxes made and prepared to be painted and finished. I decided to make the boxes out of black foam poster board and just hot glued it all together. It is lightweight and easy to carry around. It’s also smaller and easier to work with as well as looks nicer than plywood would’ve looked. Less expensive. We got 14 poster boards for about $17-20. My dad helped me put them together and plan it out in the best looking way. He helped with the cutting and the gluing since it was with an exacto knife. But I did the layout and told him where we were needing cuts and gluing. In my opinion they look so much better than I expected them to look and I can’t wait for the finished project. The final movies that I have decided to paint are Friday the 13th, The Shining, and The Exorcist. I think that the scenes I have decided on are extremely recognizable and that if you know anything about horror movies, you should love these. I can’t wait to finish this project!
During the month of October, I have had to replan my entire project and do a completely new thing in a very little amount of time. So far, I have spent this month drawing, painting and planning. I am painting the backgrounds for each of the boxes as each scene of the movies. Once I am done with the painting, I will be setting up the paintings in the boxes and then I will put all the miniatures that make it look 3D. The scenes that I have chosen from each of the movies are: the blood elevators from The Shining, the boat scene from Friday the 13th, and Glen Lantz’s bedroom scene from Nightmare on Elm Street. Each of these scenes are some of the most recognizable horror movie scenes that I could’ve chosen. If anyone knows anything about classic slasher films, they will know the 3 scenes. I am super excited to finish this project. So far, this is the only progress photo that I have taken of my paintings.More to come!
My project idea was to go volunteer at a homeless shelter and talk to the less fortunate people about their life and get to know them a little better. It is something that I am really interested in doing and that I have been interested in doing for a long time, but I think that if I want to do it in a proper, not rushed way then I have to take more time and not do it for VAM. I need lots of time, since I’m not only talking to them, but I’m also doing a photojournalism book with a portrait of the person and then their “biography” on the other page. It will take weeks to collect enough stories to make a book as well as it will take time for them to be comfortable enough to talk to me about their life and personal things that they don’t normally share. Then I would have to make and order the book which would take another 3-4 weeks to come in. In the end, I wouldn’t be able to have it done by December 19th with everything that I have going on. A lot has happened in my home life recently and I haven’t been able to stay on schedule for this project. I am unable to go and talk to them by myself and I have a lack of parent availability to help me. I’m hoping to be able to switch my project to something much more manageable in my time and that I am confident in my ability to execute it. The project that I would like to do instead of this one is a very exciting project idea. I want to remake iconic scenes from a couple horror movies as miniature models. I will have them inside a wooden box. On the inside is where I will re-create an iconic scene from each of those movies as a miniature set inside the box. Horror movies are my absolute favorite type of movies and I think that this is something that would be super enjoyable to get to do.
