This Semester, I got to participate in my third year of VAM. I have been in the class since grade 10, and as soon as I started the class, I knew it was something I wanted to be apart of until the end of school. This year, I was given the oppurtunity to create of final project of my own choosing. I got the option of anything I wanted to create.
At first, I wanted to create a photojournalism book written about the homeless people in Calgary, AB. I really really wanted to do that as my project, but I had to bring my Dad with me everytime I went to talk to homeless people which made it hard. He went on 3 out of country trips between september and october, which meant that he was barely home and nobody else could go with me due to other circumstances. I realized sadly that I was running out of time and I needed to change my idea quickly. I still plan on making this book to raise more awarness and hopefully I can do some good for the people living on the streets in Calgary. They are very much helpable, we just need to put in the effort to help, instead of just watching them. Instead of the photojournalism book, I created 3 dioramas based off of a couple of the most iconic horror/slasher films I've watched. The Exorcist, The Shining, and Friday the 13th. These are 3 of my top favourite horror movies of all time, and I wanted to recreate the most iconic scenes, my favourite scenes, to the best of my abilities. I got all my materials from michaels, and dollarama. For The Exorcist, I picked the scene where the preist is walking up to the house. It is the poster schot for the movie and just one of the colest cinematic shots I've seen. I love it and wanted to recreate it. For The Shining, I recreated the blood elevator scene, but as an extra touch, I added in the twins that stand down the hotel's hallways and are super creepy. I thought that they added a bit of extra "scare factor" into the diorama and I got great reactions from the people that looked in through the door. For the door, the obvious thing to do was to recreate the iconic redrum dor that everyone knows. Its extremely recognizable and I think that it hook people into looking to see what was inside the boxes. And finally, for Friday the 13th, I made the boat scene. It is the part in the movie where a woman is sitting in a canoe in the Crystal Lake by Camp Crystal Lake, and some creature comes put of the water and grabs her from behind. I wanted to recreate that scene because you get a shot of the killer, the nature, and you can feel the fear of her of her not knowing that there is imminent danger right behind her. I thought that it was a super recoignizable scene, especially if you are a fan of the movie. I am super super happy with how this project came out, and I am proid of myself for accomplishing all of that in just about 2 months. I was worried I wouldn't get it finished on time since I changed my project so far into the semester, but I got it done and I love the way it turned out. Im sad that VAM is coming to an end, but the last 3 years have truly been an amazing experience that I will never forget. I have learned so much about myself, about art, and about people. I have made fully new friend groups, and have found out that I love journalism so incredibly much that that is what I am going to post secondary for. I can't wait to continue to learn art and expand my knowledge and pratice outside of school. |
